God Damn Thing...

Hello. My name is Chuck (aliases Charles, Charlie, Chorlie, Chaz, Phillip) and I have many hopes and dreams, the foremost being to successfully host a wargames website. I've always been interested in web design, and have even taken a class on it (first period of my freshman year.) I am also an aspiring writer. Yet, something stands in the path of my dreams: Sloth. I was just too fucking lazy to write a wargame to put on my website. Apparently, I can exert the time to play them, tabletop or computer, but I just couldn't get past starting the writing. This is an excerpt from my first website (second incarnation) about my frustration:

Monday, August 1, 2005

I am, without a doubt, the shittiest webmaster on the face of this Earth. Seven month's tardiness in inexcusable. I finished my Web Design class in June, and the programming isn't the problem. It's the content. I have the ideas for it all penned-up in this head of mine, but I can't seem to tear myself away from my other doings to work on it. (My other doings, by the way, being: moping about being too lazy to make content for my web site, moping about not being able to persue a writing carreer [again, all penned-up in my head,] moping about not having a girlfriend, etc.) So, I can make the same hollow promises to you that I made 6 months ago, and hope that you will find it in your hearts to be patient with me.
-Chuck's World O' Wargames (angelfire)

Two days later, I was able to finish my first project. Everything was compiled, and just as my luck would have it, Freewebs.com, the new host I'm using to symbolize a new start, was "undergoing maintenance" when I finished. So, I waited a day and posted it on the fourth. A project that took me nearly a year to sit down and do, and about a day to finish, was finally up.

August 4th, 2005 - Yesterday, I completed The Wheel of Time Miniatures Wargame. Unfortunately, Freewebs was performing maintainance, so the Grand Opening of Chuck's World of Wargames was postponed for a day. Well, today is it. Enjoy the game.
-Chuck's World O' Wargames

Then, now, on the seventh, I find that Freewebs has fucked up my new web. Damn. So, of course, I'll be looking for yet another free host. I think I've used everyone but Geocities. If my site gets any traffic, there's a possibility that I'll move to a paid server that I have some control over.

At the rate this is going, that's a really big "If."

August 08 12:25 PM
The Search Begins

The search begins for my new web host. I have completely discounted the Big Three (Angelfire, Geocities, Tripod) as well as Freewebs. My list has been narrowed down as follows:

  1. 100WebSpace
  2. Complete-free-host.com
  3. FreeWebsitehost.net
  4. Gamewarrior.net
  5. Global Web
  6. Canaca-com Inc (not free)
  7. Xmission.com (not free)

I'm off to compare them, and should have my site back up by tomorrow.

Hey, if you are willing to pay for web service, why not use http://www.ehostpros.com (or at least check it out). I have heard great things about them and considered using them myself, I just haven't gotten around to building my site!

Random Update

The site has been up for a good long while (www.chucksworld.e2u.cc) and I am in the process of getting my Norse domain name. I don't really know why I'm going to bother, as it is only one character shorter than my current address. Lots of stuff (school) is going on, so I won't have the opportunity to write anymore content for a while. That goes double for stories.

September 11 5:43 PM
Notice

Just a notice: I will do my absolute best to have something new for the website every week. This schedule may be interrupted by the personal schedules of me and my beta testers.

More excuses

Now, I get to explain why there haven't been any updates to my site. Last week, I had a bunch of stuff to do, including a mock trial last Tuesday (October 11th) and then I had a big biology report due on Friday. When that was all completed, I got slammed with a speech due next Monday and a biography of J. P. Morgan due this Thursday. In short, I'm not even gonna THINK about picking up a project on my to-do list (in either games or stories) until Monday night...IF we're lucky.

October 30 2:33 PM
Conspiracy

There's got to be some kind of conspiracy over at Corunna High School to throw as much shit on me as they can. I just finished by biography and my speach, and I get hit with Spanish! This'll be short, but don't expect an update until next weekend. Also, the state of Michigan has a role in this, too. Fucking MEAP. I've still got to take parts of it this week, too.

Cabin-hunting's been good, though...

  1. Mock Trial: Done
  2. Biology Project: Done
  3. Speech: Done
  4. History Report: Done
  5. Spanish Project: Done
  6. MEAP: Finished Thursday

All of the events that caused me mental stress and inability to work on my website have ended. I'm on a recuperative break this weekend, beginning with my date last night, and I hope to get a bunch of stuff accomplished. I'm looking at an update to an existing game, a new game, and possibly even a short story.

Started War and Pieces on Thursday. Might have it done by on Wednesday. That's the first day of a FIVE DAY WEEKEND!

Best Party Ever

Yesterday, I was thrown a surprise birthday party. After being told a lie I should have realized was flimsy, I was confronted with most of my friends in the Community Center.

The Party had everything: food, most of my best friends, music, Mark and Steve burning plastic utensils, dancing, me getting my knee crushed during the Chicken Dance, a brilliant toast by Ryan, a sucky one-line speech by me ("Nobody has greater friends than I do"), the orange game, Nikki (I didn't think she'd actually come!), fun with balloons, and a limbo contest.

Apparently, Trinity and my Mom were the guiding force behind the whole thing. Now I have to get Trinity something fantastic for Christmas. Must think...

My regrets about the party: Christina, Brooke, Brett, Lana, and Elizabeth couldn't come. I blame the basketball game. And where did Schlaak go?

Moving again, possibly.

E2Uhosting.com decided to switch formats, thus leaving people who do not post a lot on their forums (e.g. people like me) in a lurch. I may have my site downgraded or lost completely. So, in the interests of preserving my site, I am scouting out some new hosts, and I am straying toward the host-for-pay sites, specifically: Dreamhost and EHostPros. As soon as I come into some money, you may be able to find Chuck's World O' Wargames at one of those locations.

December 25 4:40 PM
Christmas

The Christmas season is about Hope. All of the holidays around this time (The Celtic Alban Arthuan, the Germanic Yule, the Jewish Hanukah, the Christian Christmas, etc) are all about the return of hope. They all occur right after or on the Winter Solstice, when the day is at it's shortest and the nights their longest. Surely to the ignorant peoples or yore it must have seemed as though the sun has returned from death, and that light and life have come back into the world. That is what makes this timer period a good time in which to set miracles (the menorah staying lit, the births of Jesus and King Arthur), said miracles relating to salvation and light. So this Christmas, go out and make someone's life less shitty; lengthen their day, so to speak.

January 02 8:57 PM
An End, and A Beginning

The End: I've just finished War and Pieces and I have posted it on my website. (To avoid confusion that may be caused by my earlier post, it is still at Chuck's World O' Wargames

The Beginning: I have made a New Year's Resolution to be more diligent about my site and the writing career that hasn't gotten off the ground. (Well, that, and to be braver with the ladies.)

January 16 7:09 PM
Checking In

Okay, exams finished on Friday. My brain is now sufficiently cooled down to get back to working on my Website Projects. At the moment, I am fixing a couple of severe errors in War and Pieces. After that is concluded (could be done by tonight, if Sloth decides to take a break) I shall begin work on the Three Kingdoms Miniatures Wargame. I've already started the map for it, using AutoRealm and a map I copied from some poor fellow's Thesis.

I will update soon.

And Chemistry sucks.

January 16 7:50 PM
The Definition of Bullshit

F2U...I mean, E2U webhosting (here) has infuriated me. They switched to this "new system" whereby you have to post on this forum to get "points" so you can keep your site up. I don't post on forums, I lurk. Even then, I only lurk on the good ones. I don't think I broke 50 posts back on Dreamers of Dune, even though I was a member for a little over a year.

So today, I was trying to access my website, and was redirected to this shitty forum. I knew this was there (read one of my previous posts) but I had never previously had trouble actually viewing my site. I found this post and it explained all. I just don't have the capacity to post on that forum in copious amounts, and I'm not evil hearted enough to spam. So, I'm moving the site. I'm transferring the files (I can still access those no problem until Dec 2015) back to my hard drive, and I'm going to seek out a good host, one that relies on your money for income, so they won't pull stupid shit like E2U.

And another thing:

Every time I open up a text file in WordPerfect, it decides it's time to play "Let's Fuck with Chuck." Fonts get changed, bullets get out of whack, pictures get deleted, etc. If only I didn't rely on it to convert my wargames into .pdf files...

www.chucksworld.e2u.cc is dead

The Corel Corporation is cursed

The World Wide Web will go Chuckless for a period of time

January 16 8:23 PM
Dirty Rat Bastards!

The files are there, sitting on the E2U servers. I can see them. Nobody can get at them from the outside, but I can't even get at them VIA MY FUCKING ACOUNT! I can't salvage my damn site from those...those...I can't think of a vile enough word. I didn't loose much permanently, just a links page I can easily put back together, and an updates page which is only useful for "historical purposes." Due to my habits, everything else important is already sitting on my hard drive.

All isn't Lost

Just enough to give me The Red Ass

(Wow, three blog posts, all on the same day, within a span of 2 hours.

Is it possible to spam your own blog?)

January 18 3:45 PM
The future of the site

The files from my site on E2UHosting was salvaged via FTP. The potential new hosts have been narrowed down to Canaca.com, EHostPros, and DreamHost. If I throw money at a server to host me, it will most likely be EHostPros, based on the ratio of price to services provided. Just as soon as I can get payment set up with my parents (to send them my money), the site will go up.

Long Live Chucks World O' Wargames!

Quiz Bowl Tournament

Today, there was an all-day Quiz Bowl tourney at MSU. During the round-robin phase, we won 3 games and lost 4. This caused us to be seeded 15th out of 16th in the tournament. We beat the 2nd ranked team (they were from Wisconsin) by a technicality, and we nearly beat the 3rd ranked team. Our performance raised us to 9th place.

Also, saw Prya in person for the first time in about a year and a half.

Arg! Part I

Yesterday (Feb-13-06), I attempted to sign-up for the EHostPros Beginner web hosting. I had to use Ma's credit card, and I made the mistake of letting her participate in the ordering process. So, part of the way through the ordering, Ma does something to close the screen, and I get an E-main telling me that the credit card info has been accepted and that no more payment is due. This is all fine and dandy, except that I never got the log-in info that I was supposed to. So, I'm being charged for server space I cannot access. Peachy. Also, the domain name I registered is still available, so I know the thing didn't go through. I wrote an E-mail this afternoon requesting that the situation be rectified, and that I either get my log-in info or my money back.

February 14 5:45 PM
Arg! Part II

Well, today is St. Valentine's Day, which commemorates the martyrdom of St. Valentine. So obviously, we give each other candy and overpriced cards. Valentine must be spinning in his grave.

As per tradition, I bought Trinity a card and some candy. She appreciated the Amish pickup lines, and the enormous box of candy.

I also made 3 Valentine's cards for 3 very special ladies. I made one for Kira's birthday/V-Day (yes, one and the same, just like my grandpa. Hers said "Don't Massacre my Heart this Valentine's Day" on the front, and had a photo of the V-Day Massacre. I thought she'd get a kick out of it, but she responded with the same surliness that has been her attitude toward me since I gave her the dozen flowers on Homecoming. If she doesn't appreciate the gesture, then "Fuck her," I guess. What eats me up inside is the fact that without the bitchiness and whine-iness, she's the perfect girl, able to formulate her own opinions and support them. I even kind of like some of the bitchiness and whininess, to a point. And you can't forget her immense beauty.

I also made up a humorous card for Jamie. She thought it was nice, and so did our chemistry teacher! I'd reckon she likes me, but she's got a boyfriend. I'll just continue to be her friend and lab-partner and see how things progress.

And a made a nice card for Nita. I didn't stay long enough to ascertain her reaction.

Also, this is my 19th blog entry, and when I get to 25, that'll be it on MSN Spaces. It's not that I don't know about the archives, it's just that I don't trust "archives" maintained by the same people who can't manage to get my sent E-mails into my "Sent" folder. Arg!

February 15 3:58 PM
Success!

I have received my log-in information from the nice folks at EHostPros. My domain should be available for consumption in 24-48 hours.

February 16 4:24 PM
Success pt. II

Domain successfully up. All things are go at www.chucksphere.com. I'm going to try to create a subdomain to host Chuck's World O' Wargames, as I am planning on expanding and creating more sites on different topics in the future.

February 20 7:37 PM
HUZZAH! MY DREAM COME TRUE!

I've had a busy couple of days (what with meeting with college professors today and loafing yesterday) so I haven't been able to write about the awesome thing that happened to me on Saturday, February 18th, 2006.

I was in the shower at about 8:45 that night, thinking that my day was just about over. Then, the phone rings. My pa answers, and it's Jaimie. Pa takes a message, and I hurry up and get out of the shower. Thinking that she just called for help on homework, I take the time to shave. When I call back, she reveals that she just called to talk, and then asked if I was busy. I said no, and asked why. Then, she invited me to go see "The Pink Panther" with her. I leaped at the opportunity. It was 10 to 9, and the moving picture started at 9:15 (or so I thought. It actually "started" at 9:30. Previews and shit ran until 9:45)

I also had very few clean clothes, so I wore green cargo pants and a white sweat-shirt with a red stain on the back. (I wore a coat over it to hide the stain.)

We met at the theater, and I paid for the tickets, she paid for the drinks. We talked about stuff, and a subject that frequently came up was the fact that her boyfriend kept calling her/leaving voicemail messages. Apparently, he views me as a threat to him. This is both good and bad. It may mean that Jaimie has feelings for me, and/or that her BF is going to kill me. I hope so very much that it is the former.

The movie was mediocre.

After the film, she called for her ride and I called for mine on her cell phone. (This is where I found out that she has my number saved.) Her ride shows up, but she insisted on keeping my company until my ride arrives. We talked some more.

All in all, a pretty decent night.

Aww...who am I kidding?

Pretty Damn Good Night.

Quiz Bowl 2005-2006

So, on the 9th of March, we had the finale tournament for the Quiz Bowl League I am in. This heralds the end of the Quiz Bowl Season, with the exception of the State Tournament at the end of April. As a record of my achievements, I am now going to divulge the statistics of the Varsity Quiz Bowl Team for this year.

Quiz Busters:
2 Wins
1 Loss to East Lansing

First Season:
11 Wins
1 Loss
First Place
No Conference Titles were granted, although I was voted First Team All-Conference in this league last year.

Rube Invitational:
4 Wins
5 Losses

Second Season:
9 Wins
2 Losses
Tournament: 2 wins 2 losses
Overall: Second Place
I got First Team All-Conference, as I did last year. Tory got Second Team All-Conference. Brian got an honorable mention.

The State Tournament is highly anticipated.

Weekend Recap

On Friday (the 10th) we had a man named Reverend Pickle come to our school and lecture us on the evils of drugs. Words fail me when I describe the craziness of the presentation. It was intense. I can only say that anyone who doesn't get clean after that presentation deserves what they get, if what they get is bad.

Later that day, I filmed my Biology movie at Tom's house. It continued later that Saturday morning. It took us more than 9 hours total to film, we had 42 mutes and 44 seconds of raw footage, and 11 minutes 10 seconds made it into the film. Crazy.

Also, on un unrelated note, according to Time Magazine, 85% of soldiers in Iraq think our purpose there is to retaliate for Saddam Hussein's role in 9/11. This is shameful...just shameful.

March 17 6:37 PM
Wrap-Up

This, the 25th and last post on this MSN Space, will be a list of that which I plan to do with my site, and when those goals seem achievable.

First item of business: a new blog. I am considering a public-open blog, possibly on MySpace. I will use this blog to vent my spleen on any topic that vexes me, and to make public my shitty announcements about my shitty website.

Second: I have received RPG Maker XP from Tom, and I am currently designing one of the games on my To-Do list--Under Fire. This may take a long time, considering concurrent projects and school work.

Third: The Three Kingdoms board game development has halted due to lack of focus. I will get back on that as soon as my schedule clears. Look for it around the middle of April.

So, that about wraps it up. Look for my first MySpace post, “So what’s the Deal with Blogs?” sometime around the release date of Three Kingdoms.
